How Do I Access Services and Support?

Currently, you can access support in one of the following three ways:

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The NDIS is a government insurance scheme that will be rolled in stages; hence, you may not be eligible right now for NDIS support, but will in the future. The NDIS will eventually become the primary source of funding for people with disabilities in Australia.

The NDIS will be rolled out in the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury LGA starting in September 2015 for children aged 17 years or younger.

Your ability to access or transition to the NDIS is dependent upon your age, location and whether you meet the criteria for disability support or early intervention. Use the NDIS My Access Checker to see whether you are eligible to transition to NDIS or call about the NDIS on 1800 800 110. Once you have confirmation of your funding, NDIS consultants will guide you, your family and/or carer through the following planning process:

  1. NDIS planners will help you identify your needs, goals and current supports
  2. With the help of your NDIS planner you will design a system of supports that will assist you in reaching your goals, increasing your participation in the community and developing towards greater independence
  3. You will choose from a variety of options for managing your own funding (including self-managing)
  4. You can choose to self-manage your plan or engage a registered NDIS service providers in your area, such as NADO, to help you access the supports you are looking for

Family and Community Services, Department of Ageing, Disability & Home Care (ADHC)

If you are not yet covered by the NDIS due to the staged rollout of the scheme, you will need to determine your eligibility for funding through Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC), which is part of the NSW Government’s Department of Family and Community Services. This funding will eventually be phased out as people with disabilities transition over to the NDIS.

The Nepean Blue Mountains regional ADHC Information, Referral and Intake Team will give you more information on services available in the Nepean Region. Contact them on 02 4734 9499 | 1800 881 901 | email:
